Here is February’s tasks for Gardeners.
There are no absolutes here so do not follow these instructions literally when the weather clearly is not right for the situation. Usually it the cold that gets our crops because of timing. Beware of that.
General Garden Work
- Weed
- Clear dead tops and branches from plants
- Dress beds with bone meal
- Apply nitrogenous fertilizer to fruit trees and bushes grown in grass
- Prune
- Canes and hedges
- Apples
- Gooseberries
- Pears
- Remove any left over fruits or those on ground
- Sow
- Beans (Broad)
- Jerusalem Artichokes
- Parsnips
- Peas (Early Peas)
- Shallots
- Spinach
- Summer Cabbage
- Turnips
- Force Rhubarb
- Protect from Frost
- Apricots
- Nectarines
- Peaches
- Plant out containers of trees and shrubs
- Harvest (as needed)
- Beet
- Cabbage
- Celeriac
- Celery
- Chard
- Chicory
- Endice
- Jerusalem Artichokes
- Parsnips
- Salsify
- Scorzonera
- Swedes
- Turnips
- Check Potato bed and check no old potato’s are in it. Fork in compost or rotted manure
- Protect root crops with fleece to enable easier harvesting
- Cover unused soil with black sheeting to warm it up
- Set up cloches at least two weeks before using
Greenhouse
- Wash and clean greenhouse
- Sow
- Lettuce
- Radish
- Rocket
- Sterilise pots and seed trays
Indoor Work
- Chit potatoes
- Sow from seed
- Aubergines
- Half hardy annuals
- Onions
- Peppers
