How we need to prepare

This is what is wrong with our society

An American businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied, that it only took a little while. The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish. The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The American then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, señor.”

The American scoffed. “I am a Wharton MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But señor, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “Fifteen or twenty years.”

“But what then, señor?”

The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.”

“Millions, señor? Then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

We just don’t really think things through.

We buy an expensive house that needs a good job to keep going then we spend hours commuting to that job and don’t see the kids until they are asleep. Then we miss their special events, their first words, starting to walk, schools plays, helping them with homework and then we say it is all for the family.

That is our species in general. Never happy with what we have and too dumb to recognise what we have in our hands is all we really need.

Me, I know what I want and I’m building on it. It won’t make me popular but it will make me happy.

General Update

Bit of a mixed week. Been away for most of it and my raised beds have not moved at all. Trying to paint them before assembly but the weather is not cooperating. Rain and my available time seem to be in sync so when I’m free it is raining.

Went to a bird sale as a friend deals in show birds. While I was there a pair of Bantams came up and nobody wanted them so I bought them for £5. Nice looking birds but certainly an impulse buy. They have slotted into the back garden in their own cage which cost me more than they did. As they are a pair I’m keeping an ear out for the cockerel. So far I can hear it when I make a point of being awake at first light but so far nothing that is waking people up so fingers crossed or it will be a meal.

I went to a local hydroponics shop on my way home as well. Was very disappointed how little the guy had tried. Just basic stuff on basic kit and he didn’t have that much in the shop either besides a few basic units and a ton of media to grow in. There is another shop close to me that I will have to visit. Hopefully they will have a widen variety and have more experience.

I’ve also discovered mice in my garage. They can’t get into the stored food but I suspect that they have gained access to the chicken feed which I thought was elevated out of their reach. Pulling it all out is going to be a pain.

I’ve also had the replace every one of the tomato plants that were dug out by the *^%$&%* chickens last week. The others have survived OK.

Not one of the better weeks I’ve had from a prepping point of view but on a more positive note I’ve made progress in my plans for the year again.

There are a few comments on regarding the way forward for the sites. I’ll answer each and every one of them including those submitted privately when I draw the consultancy part to a close. I’m not commenting on the comments in the meantime so I don’t taint the replies not because I am not interested. Keep them coming good or bad.

The files site has been up a bit now and people are downloading files on a regular basis. My bandwidth usage has increased significantly over the years with the bandwidth usage for the downloaded files increasing daily. It isn’t an issue as I made sure my package was unlimited bandwidth so it doesn’t impact me at all. I’ve had some feedback on the files site by a couple of people and its user interface which I will consider as part of the main site changes overall, so any feedback on that is also appreciated.

I’m happy to receive feedback via the contact us system for those that want to say things in private although I would prefer public comments. Most private comments could have been public and it may have encouraged others to discuss the comments.

It is a different world

I’m currently in London working at our HQ. I came down yesterday to attend the leaving do for my immediate boss.

When I arrived at the train station I noticed that the whole area was full of people going about their business, suitcases and laptops were all over the place with people talking on mobiles at every corner. No sign of the down side of our capital. At our HQ I swiped in and went to find a spare desk to work from. The office was full of highly paid executives and support staff with a couple of cleaners, post people and secretaries. I would guess about 5% of them were on less than the average wage. The place was buzzing with activity.

So, at COP, we retired to the pub around the corner. Nice old style pub which had been modernised to serve food after the anti smoking legislation. We were there at 1700 and it was quite quiet. Over the next hour it started to fill up and got quite packed. Considering that this is a Wednesday and just an ordinary day for most people I was surprised how many were there. Just shows how much I am out of touch.

The CEO had called in for this leaving do as well and I was surprised how many senior people in the company were present.

At about 2300 most of the people that had come to say goodbye had gone, leaving about 9 hardcore drinkers plus myself, when it was decided that we should go to a club. Leaving the pub the area was still packed with people going about their lives and heading off for entertainment. We got a couple of taxis that took us a mile and cost £10. Our driver didn’t even know where were going, so much for the Knowledge. Luckily our fearless leader did and gave directions but we lost three people on the journey. Not sure how that happened as the cabs hardly even got moving but when we arrived we were down to 6. Because of the lack of phone calls I suspect that they simply headed off home. Us older types get tired easily.

The club had a slight queue but we walked straight in for some reason and our leader paid the entry fee for us at the door as we were scanned with a wand. It didn’t even go off when my Swiss Army Knife was scanned so I don’t know what use the scanning was for. At the bar drinks were about three times what they were in my local. The place was about half full when we got in and over the evening it slowly filled up with partying kids plus a few old farts like us. Even the old farts seemed to have a good time and the atmosphere was good. The place didn’t get packed to the seams but it was full.

At about 0200 a couple of us decided we had had enough and we headed off home. The streets around the clubs were quieter at this time although there were still plenty of happy people around. On the way back to the hotel we hit a beggar. He simply harassed us for 10p for a cup of tea which went up to a couple of quid when my colleague pulled out his wallet. A big mistake I thought as he pulled the wallet out but we were lucky, he accepted a quid from each of us and took off muttering about mean bastards which I though a bit rich considering he now had more cash than I had. I was totally skint.

Got to the hotel fine and went to bed where I had a good nights kip as usual. The sleep of the innocent.

All the time I was trying to reconcile our understanding of the state of the country with what I was seeing. Our group spent hundreds of pounds that night. Thousands was spent in the two places we went alone with people who did not have a care in the world. Out having fund spending what was clearly available cash. Credit cards were being swiped every few seconds.

None of them look any further than that, this is why they do not have any concerns they do not see anything outside of their very narrow bubble. They have no concept of anything going wrong to a level that will impact them. Everything will be fine. Even touching on the subject of economic issues just resulted in the comments of I just don’t see any. Look around you.

So large chunks of London are in a nice cosy bubble. These are the people making the big decisions in business and government and there is such a huge disconnect that we will never manage to convince them that there are any issues. No converts today.

In the meantime I continue to just carefully nibble at the edges and try and educate those that are not so close minded. We will never convince enough to make it a threat to us but every one we choose increases the chances of making it a better way than it would be with just the feral surviving. Those that choose not to listen are in for a big shock, or are they?

Eggs and more eggs

The chickens are still laying like little machines so I’m getting quite a few eggs still. So many that despite being the supplier to my parents and well as the kids I’m getting fed up with eggs. Egg overload. There is now a little pile of eggs and more being added daily.

So I had a look at what I can do to preserve them for future use when things are not so good and came across the following technique which uses a dehydrator to powder the eggs. These can then be reconstituted. The first method given here does not cook them prior to powdering and thus can still contain salmonella. This lack of cooking however allows them to be reconstituted to make scrambled eggs which the second method will not, or not a very tasty version anyway.

Obviously powdered egg cannot be used to make boiled, fried or poached eggs, I do like a boiled egg but don’t have them fried or poached anyway. They are ideal for scrambled egg, which I love and for baking which is fine.

The method which allows tasty scrambled egg.

1) Beat six eggs to a fine paste in a bowl.
2) Lightly grease the fruit roll sheet in the dehydrator.
3) Pour the eggs onto the Fruit Rolls sheet.
4) Set the temperature to 145oF.
5) Set the timer for 16 hours.
6) Grind the dried chunks into a fine powder.
7) Label and store away in an air tight container.
8) Store in a cool dark place.

If you are concerned about the potential for salmonella. Perhaps you may be unable to fully cook your reconstituted eggs or you may use the egg powder as an additive, you can use this method which cooks the eggs first.

A method that fully cooks the eggs.

1) Beat six eggs to a fine paste in a bowl.
2) Cook in a pan to make scrambled eggs.
3) Place the scrambled egg onto the drying rack in your dehydrator.
4) Set the temperature to 145oF.
5) Set the timer for 4 hours. Check the chunks are brittle.
6) Grind the dried chunks into a fine powder.
7) Label and store away in an air tight container.
8) Store in a cool dark place.

For long term storage we should use both these methods to make powdered egg. Just make sure that they are correctly labelled. Think about how much scrambled egg you use compared to what you use for baking. I will be storing more from the second method in my prepping stores. I’m thinking at a ration of 9 to 1.

Using the powdered egg

Reconstituting the powder is simple. To make one average sized egg mix 1 heaping tablespoon of egg powder together with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir it up, let it sit for 5 min and then use as you would normally.

Considerations

You can buy powdered egg quite cheaply in the shops which would be of use for our prepping. This methods just means my eggs, free range, fresh, don’t go to waste. I doubt I could make powdered egg for what I can buy it for already packed and sealed. I look on it as a way to fully utilise my produce and I suspect all the arguments for having your own chickens for eggs goes for the powdered stuff as well.
