How we need to prepare

New Year Catch Up – The Site

I still have plans for the sites and there are four areas I want to focus on with them.

First of all the files site I’ve been going on about for two years. I will be releasing it soon. I’ve finally got my act together and made it a proper project. I’ve a hell of a lot of files that will be useful to everyone that needs to be put online. I need to get this done.

Secondly, I will monitor the forum over the next few months and make a decision on the software I want to use and the way forward. I have MyBB now and it has its issues. The add-ons have been problematic to say the least and it is very resource intensive. In addition the ISP issues I had at the beginning of the year have seen some users leave never to return and I’ve only just received a new user request since then where as before I was regularly getting three or four a week. I need to keep an eye on this area.

Thirdly, I need to make some changes to the main site. Nothing radical just moving the downloads and checklists to the files site, perhaps a new header and a general shake up to get the cobwebs off. There is slow but steady growth on the main site with more visiting as time goes on.

Finally I’m looking at adding a shop. I’m going to add an online shop to the site. Primarily to make some cash for prepping and to give myself a bit of bulk buying power for other items. Hopefully you will find it to be useful to you as well.

New Year Catch Up – Communications

Although I’m happy with my communications prepping I still have a few areas that could do with improvement which I should get done this year.

First of all I need to sort out a stealth antenna around my home location which I can install and use now as well as a portable backup for when OPSEC calls for it. In addition I am looking for a small portable antenna that can be assembled where needed to improve reception.

Next up I want to sort out the power packs for the comms units. I’d like to standardise on AA battery packs where possible as well as 12V power for and vehicle use. Many of the portable units, UV3R and UV5Rs have a special battery pack that they use while many other systems are 12V powered. My PMR radios use AA batteries already. 12V power or rechargeable AA batteries is the objective for these units.

I’m also looking at configuring all my units to a common standard. Many can’t be configured but some can. My UV3R and UV5Rs are at different standards and as our communication gurus have developed one for SurvivalUK it makes sense to stick with that. I want to modify each to the standard as well as document how to do that manually.

I also want to define a standard portable kit for the bug out bag, one for a car kit as well as a house kit. Then make sure I build up those kits which I should be able to do from existing equipment.

Finally, I want to put in a ham radio setup and get it configured and working. I’ll be looking around for advice so I can achieve this.

As a matter of interest I also want to look at the PSK31 computer interface that was talked about on the forum. It sounds like it could be useful so should be worth a little bit of investigation.

New Year Catch Up – Garden

This is the big one for me this year. I plan to make major changes in the garden and invest some time and funds to correct some of the mistakes I made in previous years.

If you remember I opted for container and raised bed gardening which I felt would suit me and my garden better. The intention with containers was to enable them to be moved when I found a plot of land and to stop them being raided after an event I intended to denude them straight after the event making them unrecognisable., My raised beds were going to be builders bags which also makes them potentially portable as well as raised. I currently have several containers around with a variety of fruits in them, a greenhouse and a raspberry patch.

First of all I decided I was going to have to revamp the area. It has grown in a haphazard way and I need to get it under control. The chickens have been allowed to run loose and have destroyed almost everything. So first thing is to partition the garden off. I’ll put aside the back third for the chickens, the rabbits and the bees. I can put a couple of the larger plants in there as well. I’ll bury some wire in about a quarter of that area to stop the rabbits digging their way out.

I’ve two sheds, first an old shed that needs replacing behind the greenhouse. It has been leaking for some time and over the winter had started to rot and so I have disassembled it and moved it to the driveway. I’ll put in a new shed I can use and I’m considering using it for aquaponics or for growing fish. Not sure yet what is best. The other shed I will continue to use for storage.

The greenhouse already contains a grape which I will keep and I’ll put some more staging in and use it for what it is intended instead of a tool store.

Couple that with a couple of portable greenhouses next to the garage and that should cover my seeds and my strawberry requirements. I’m also looking at putting some growbag trays and cloches on the roof of the garage to give me increased plant space. I can fix them to the roof without any issues although I have concerns about winds like we had a few weeks ago. We will just have to look at it carefully.

I’m looking at getting three builders bags of earth to give me the raised growing areas in the second third of the garden. Depending on how they go I may even get double that in the space. I’m going to build a mini greenhouse around each of these bags and use this area for a mixture of crops to feed the rabbits plus ourselves. I already have separate bags for potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes and I’ll keep them as they worked fine over the last few years. This year I’ll supplement those bags with others to grow more veg like lettuce and carrots.

I also need to revisit all the containers which will see me replanting what I can and replacing those I can’t. This time I’ll make a much better job of the containers and ensure that the drainage is OK which is where I went wrong last time. Many of the containers didn’t drain properly and all those plants died. I’ll be a lot more careful this time.

In addition I’m looking at plumbing up the garden a bit better. I’ll put a couple of water butts elevated on the side of the house and run pipes from them to all the containers, the chickens and the greenhouse. I can also use some micro irrigation within the greenhouse to help there. Another area I didn’t do to well on last year as it dried out several times whilst I was working away.

I’m also going to look at the opportunity to install some hydroponic or aquaponic units on the back roof of the house and put a walkway up there. The roof can handle a bit of weight and I only need a walkway to enable this.

This component will be my biggest personal investment of time this year. I want this to be a successful growing year. The last few have not been as productive as they could have been and I put that down to the lack of time I spent looking after then, rushing the containers, and not keeping them watered or fed correctly. This year I will invest the time to get a decent contribution from my garden.

New Year Catch Up – Livestock Pt 3

Additionally I also looked at reducing the costs of the livestock I keep at home. The Bees don’t really take much and I can’t reduce what they do need. The chickens I keep fed with pellets and corn mix which I buy in a bag at a time. I give them a scoop of pellets every day with every few days a scoop of corn. They also get the scraps I throw out and any bugs they find while they dig up the back yard. The fish I intend to buy will need to be fed as well so anything I can do to reduce costs there will help. I have looked at some of the live food available for pets and could enhance their diets, and reduce my costs, by feeding them some live food as a supplement to their diet.

Out of all the live foods available I’m looking at food that doesn’t move very fast so can’t escape too well nor do I want something that can fight back. So, I excluded locusts and crickets. Mealworms though look ideal. Easy to catch, full of goodness and easy to keep. They can be fed live or dried and I could every see them on our menu at some stage although hopefully not for a while yet. Earthworms also seem a good choice although they grow in the garden so we don’t need to cultivate them at this stage. I just don’t need enough to set up a worm farm. I can always dig up a few when I need them. Mealworms I need to cultivate to ensure that I can keep them available.

Mealworms don’t need much space and a 30G tank is overkill for that so I just need one of the smaller containers. Throw in some mealworms bought from a shop and then just feed them. Then we just harvest when we need them. One of the easiest projects.

I’ve also had a look at flies. Normal fruit flies that we can cultivate and a new variety I have just found called Black Soldier Flies. The BSF are prolific eaters of waste and their grubs grow fast. Normal flies we can easily cultivate with a bit of left over meat and left hanging can provide some grubs with the minimum of work. The BSF seem the ideal waste disposal unit for food waste converting it into little grubs you can feed your chickens, fish and, if needs must, yourself. As before fruit flies don’t need to be cultivated at this stage. BSF I need to cultivate.

There are commercial units you can buy to convert the waste and store all the outputs. BSF seem very efficient and convert anything edible. However, there are several home made units demonstrated on YouTube. Search for Black Soldier Flies. So again I won’t be using a 30G tank. I’ll need to buy some kit for this project and build my own unit as well as the starter for the colony.

Ironically, since I have started prepping, setting up composters and minimising my waste I find that I don’t generate enough food waste for my requirements. As some of the waste goes to keeping things fed I need to prioritise that. So with this latest plan I need to keep the waste converters fed. Next up are the chickens and finally the composter. I can see the solution is scavenging food waste from my neighbours while I can.
