New Year Catch Up – Livestock Pt 2

I have also considered keeping fish as I have a 100 Gal tank as well as two 30 gal tanks that I can use. The 100G tank was previously used for Marine fish and will be sufficient for a few fish as a starter for the future. I really want to keep some fish as I do see this as a valuable addition to my food production.

Although I can only keep a small amount of fish as a starter in the tanks I can expand after an event and I have catered for this by having some large swimming pools. I can move the fish into those pools from my starter when it is safe to do so.

I’m not clear on what is the best fish for me at the moment as there are several fish that can be kept in our climate without power but I can also consider fish that prefer some heat as with a little bit of insulation, some solar heating and solar panels we could widen the temperature range a little. It isn’t my preferred option because all it takes is a breakdown at a critical stage and your stock is gone. Perhaps worth considering if there is an option for two or more stocks.

I also see fish closely linked with Aquaponics which we will talk about later.

So I want to investigate the types of fish that I could easily keep inside for use in the 100G tank and an additional option for an outside container, a pond, swimming pool, barrel or similar.

At the very minimum I will keep some fish in the 100G internal tank.

New Year Catch Up – Livestock

As part of my year end review I also looked at the livestock I keep at home. I’ve already got chickens and bees but want to expand on that. I’ve thought of expanding into fish, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs and bugs and even considered a goat.

The current state of affairs is that I have three chickens which I bought early last year but no cockerel. This concerns me a bit as it means I have no fertile eggs so when the chickens stop laying or die I am without any way of replacing them. As I live in a built up area I am unable to have a cockerel so I have to live with that. The chickens have integrated so well it seems like they have been there forever and the only issue with them is that they have totally destroyed the back garden in search for bugs.

I also have bees. These were bought late last year and so this year will be the first full year with them. I’ve attended a training course and have a friend who is a beekeeper. From what I can see they require very little support being wild animals and all we have to do is look after them if there is an issue such as illness or attack. For that they reward us, or more correctly we steal, honey and wax. I think everyone prepping should consider bees in their garden. There are not very difficult to keep and virtually look after themselves 99% of the time. Your work is mainly stealing their work and checking they are still alive (because you are stealing their food stores).

As I let the chickens run free in the back garden while I worked away it is pretty much destroyed. I have purchased some fencing which I will use to partition off about a third of the rapidly shrinking garden so I can restock the pots and containers that have died or been eaten.

So what else can I fit in my garden? I can only consider garden variety livestock where the largest is about the size of a sheep or goat. I don’t particularly want sheep but would love a goat. Not at the moment though as I no longer have near enough space for sheep, goat or pigs even the pygmy variety, if I ever did, so I have to consider the smaller mammals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, etc. Goats will have to wait until I get a bit of land of a few acres. I need it to be close enough so I can walk to it after an event but far enough away so that it is secure now. I could then move a cockerel on to the land as well as having the capability for other livestock like the goats, ducks and more bees.

So realistically it looks like I can only add rabbits at this time. So I’m going to add a hutch and put two does and a buck in and let them get on with what rabbits are supposedly good at. I’ll then harvest them and keep myself in fresh meat and rabbit skins. I’ve have to ensure the chicken fencing gets buried properly to stop the rabbits burrowing out though. Having a breeding pair now and getting used to them is going to make things easier after an event and at least with a pair of rabbits I can keep them going. I’m not sure what I can do for growing food for rabbits as I may not have enough growing space for them at them moment so I will have to look at buying in some rabbit food.

Question is; what type of rabbits do I get? I want them for meat and not for anything else and although I’ve seen a few types around I haven’t looked at them enough to find out what is going to fit my requirements best. I’ll have to spend some time investigating the type I want before I start this project. The usual requirements of eat nothing, minimal maintenance and maximum yield apply.

So that is it for the garden. What else can I look at in this area? I have a 100 Gallon and two 30 Gallon fish tanks that I want to put to use so up next I look at what I can do with what equipment I have.

New Year Catch Up – Power

Last year I purchased a complete solar panel system of 240W. Not massive by any means. The reasoning behind it was simple. I have a house full of women and they just can’t seem to switch the lights off. My thoughts were I would power the lights, and the lights alone, and it would be a stepping stone to solar energy as well as a cost saving exercise. I then put the kit behind the door and forgot about it.

As part of my review I thought about the purchase. Was it still the right choice?

In my house I use electrickery for lighting, cooking, preservation; Fridge and freezer, washing and entertainment; Computers and a TV with a video. Occasionally power tools for building or general work. After an event I wont be using a machine for washing, I could do with a fridge and freezer but should really find alternatives. I have various other ways to cook and I won’t need a DVD, TV. I would use a computer but only in the short term. Lighting will be restricted due to OPSEC but still the only real requirement as we need a good light, many alternatives give poor light. So my panels will do just fine. As long as I actually install them of course. So it goes up in priority.

As a bonus of course I make some savings on my electrickery bill before any event.

I’ll look at what I can do for a fridge/freezer to give me that technology for after an event and I need to add in my future requirements for powering Aquaphonic systems which I will also be looking at this year. I’m hoping each system would have its own panel though so no need for anything sophisticated but we will see.

Once installed I will test the light in line with some computer use and revisit the requirement if I see the need or the system is not big enough to provide part time power for the computer as well but for now I’m happy with what I bought.

Herbal Training at NW Meet

Another interesting meet.

Started with TimeLord talking about Shotguns and that advantages of the smaller gauges, 20G or .410. The advantages of reloading your own shotgun shells in those gauges and why your should consider these options.

Then we went on to Ken Eames for his Herbal course.

First we made a few Tinctures. Passion Flower, Aniseed and Elecampane. Basically took the raw ingredients and weighed them. Put in an old jam jar with a proportional amount of Vodka and that was it. Need to shake daily for at least two weeks before it is ready. Best left for a couple of months unless you need it desperately. You then remove it, squeeze the liquid out of the material and store in a bottle. We made some samples for experience.

Next up were ointments. Same principle an ingredient, Beeswax in an oil Arnica. Heat up some water until boiling. Turn off the heat. Then add the mix into a porringer to melt the beeswax. When complete remove from the water and stir until it starts to congeal and pour into ointment jars.

Finally we did some pills. Not the party variety but Kelp which we put in some gelatine capsules. Handy for thyroid and minerals. Again we made some up, using the pill making machine it was really easy.

Don’t forget to label everything up after you have made it and it is ready for use, tinctures in a few weeks.

After cleaning and tidying up we then had a session with TimeLord on shields and short range weapons. We all agreed we needed some training sessions so we plan to do that in the future.

So a few different topics and very interesting it was too.

I did look at videoing the sessions as requested but unfortunately it was impractical without compromising OPSEC. Sorry.
