How we need to prepare

Contingency Planning

Well, it has been nearly a week now since the site ground to a halt and I’m sure that you are all wondering what is taking so long to fix. I am myself. The problem was an upgrade on another site which brought down my whole portfolio of sites. Every one of them that is using PHP ground to a halt which makes no sense at all. I have suspicions but need the sites back to investigate. I haven’t been hacked nor do I have any malicious programs on any of the sites.

Although my package was unlimited it seems that there were limits after all and I was forced to upgrade on Sunday as there was no way I could move everything to another ISP in a reasonable timescale. However, my ISP, 1 and 1, proves again it is crap as after 48 Hours I’m still without any PHP based websites while I wait for my ISP to upgrade me. Your account will be upgraded in 6 hours it said on the website. Typical of their service. The issue I have is that I don’t speak to them often, most of the time the service is up and running. They are good when everything is going well, uptime is great, my sites have gone years with few issues but lousy service when things go wrong as you have seen.

I don’t have any contingency myself because to be frank I don’t see the site as critical and expected it to be down for a day tops while the ISP swings into action. Swings sounds too speedy a word for my ISP.

I can only apologise and assure you that as soon as I am upgraded I will be moving the sites onto the new super dooper server and hopefully service will return to normal. I’d make a post but you will notice the improvement as the sites are migrated.

As way of compensation I will give everyone a years free subscription to Survival UK. What else could you need?

On the plus side my spam has dropped off to a fraction of what it was. I’m a cup half full kind of guy.

Three Years On – Happy Birthday to Survival UK

It seems much longer than three years ago when I started this site but that is probably due to the fact I was managing another site before then providing political commentary, a few very frustrating years that was but I did what I could even putting my head above the parapet until I simply decided that our corrupt and self serving politicians were never going to change and by then we were at a stage that financial collapse was inevitable. I then started this site to help people prepare for that almost certain future.

So three years on. I’m still happy that the site is doing what I intended;

  1. Providing information and advice for people to help them prepare
  2. Providing facilities to question and discuss options in prepping matters
  3. Providing facilities to enable people to meet and collaborate on prepping activities

It has really only been this last year where the meeting and collaboration part has taken off with several of you now actively involved with others in your local areas. It makes it all worthwhile and a lot more satisfaction than a political site could ever generate.

As far as stats go things are pretty much following the same formula as last year. I’m still getting a steady growth of readers at about 2% a month with significantly more readers than contributors. There seems to be a hard core of about fifteen people who comment and discuss on the site while there are literally thousands who simply read the main articles, many by RSS, and don’t comment. I get massive leaps, it goes up to 10 times normal, for about a week after I get mentioned on any US sites. This is pretty much in line with last years stats as well. Most of the core are the same people as last year as well. I’ve had a few emails from people after I queried this last year and it appears that the reason why is they are happy with the information and don’t have any questions or anything to add so they just don’t comment. Fair enough.

On a more personal note I’ve spent less time on here this year with work taking so much time especially with the travelling. It has allowed me to meet more of you though so that has been interesting but the site has had less posts over the year than previous years. I’m hoping to travel less this year and reverse that trend. The issue is though that I could use some articles from the users, thats you by the way. I just don’t know everything.

I like to think that we show the true issues that we need to prep for. No statement that all we need is a shotgun and 2000 cartridges. We look at it in a cold light and show how it is, how it will be and point out that no matter how much you have put aside, no matter how much you have spent and no matter how much experience you have there are no gaurantees. Only things you can do to improve your chances.

Here goes for another year.

Will we all be Farmers?

I was thinking at after an event most, if not all, of us will end up as farmers. Planting in our own patch of land as well as whatever livestock we have or can acquire after an event. It seems the most sensible choice and the only one which appears likely that will feed us and our families.

Other options available are specialising in items in your area, blacksmiths, doctors, etc. where you can barter your trade for food from the farmers. Many of us are looking at doing this as well as farming then obviously if your trade takes off you can concentrate on the most lucrative or that which is the least work.

Those are not however the only choices. We could, for example, become raiders and steal what we want. After a while though we would likely end up dead in a gutter or swinging from a tree. This seems to be favourite among many people so watch who you are talking too.

I however was thinking along the lines of alternative lifestyles, ones suitable for single people rather than family men, roles such as traders, going around the country and trading for a living, buying salt where it is available and selling for oranges for example where it is not. We don’t tend to consider other options because most of us need to put food on the table for our children.

It is a lifestyle that I think I would like to do if I didn’t have commitments. Travelling, meeting people, building relationships and bartering, not for myself, but for others. It is risky, being robbed is the preferred outcome from many encounters and as you are going around meeting people you can hardly hide. Traders were rich, relatively speaking, in the olden days, despite the raiders and they had a varied lifestyle travelling. Many of them even travelling the globe.

Most of the other similar historical lifestyles are probably a bit risky, mercenary or gun for hire could suit many ex military but you would be without the logistics and backup you are used to. You could also just simply disappear and become a drifter, working for whatever you needed and simply moving from place to place selling your labour.

I’m sure there are many more lifestyles for those without family commitments after an event. However, this will be an issue in the short term future as our children decide they want to have the adventure we had and decide that farming is not for them.

Many of our children will decide they will have a little adventure in their lives before they are forced to settle down and hold a family together. For these people the future will be full of promise and much more than is available now. Despite the dangers, and there are many, it will be the adventurous life that our children will crave, that they won’t get from farming and helping us feed the family. Many will leave the nest to embark on this life of adventure and unlike those that do that now we can’t keep in contact. Many will never return. So, to make sure ours do we need to ensure that they can stand on their own two feet and that if they do chose another lifestyle that they are self sufficient and capable. A bit like you.

For those of us that need to be farmers because of our family situations, we will be happy with our lot. We had our time.
